Job Description: Project Manager / Estimator

Location: Elk Grove Village, IL (Chicagoland field visits)
Department: Construction – Project Management & Preconstruction
Reports to: Senior Estimator / Project Manager

About the Role

We’re looking for a detail-driven Project Manager / Estimator to support field operations and preconstruction on union commercial, industrial, multi-tenant residential, and mission-critical projects. You’ll manage awarded projects, partnering closely with IBEW foremen, superintendents, and our GC / owner teams. You’ll also perform material / labor takeoffs, solicit vendor quotes, and build competitive estimates.

What You’ll Do

Project Management (≈75%)

  • Support PMs with submittals, RFIs, change events, procurement, and look-ahead schedules.
  • Track costs, labor hours, and productivity (budget vs. actual); maintain buyout and PO logs.
  • Coordinate material deliveries, prefab requests, rentals, and tool needs with the field.
  • Assist with meeting minutes, action items, and closeout (O&Ms, as-builts, training).
  • Promote safety and code compliance; support site walks and punch list with IBEW foremen.

Estimating & Preconstruction (≈25%)

  • Perform electrical takeoffs (power, lighting, systems, gear, feeders, branch, devices) using labor units consistent with NECA standards.
  • Build estimates in Accubid / Trimble (or similar), apply NECA MLU productivity factors, and assemble alternates / VE options.
  • Solicit, compare, and scope vendor / sub quotes (gear, lighting, generators, ATS/UPS, fire alarm, low voltage, subcontractors).
  • Prepare clarifications / RFIs during bid phase and maintain bid logs and proposal forms.
  • Develop prelim one-lines, feeder schedules, and count sheets to support proposals.

Tools You’ll Use

  • Estimating: Accubid / Trimble, McCormick, or equivalent.
  • Plans / Markup: Bluebeam Revu; PlanGrid, and Procore.

 

  • Scheduling / Tracking: MS Project (or Primavera), Excel (pivot tables), PowerPoint, Clock Shark.
  • Standards/Code: NEC (NFPA 70), NFPA 70E, local amendments; basic understanding of ComEd/utility standards.

What You Bring

Required

  • 1–3 years in electrical construction (office or field) or an EET / CM degree with relevant internships.
  • Solid blueprint reading; able to interpret one-lines, risers, specs, and submittals.
  • Working knowledge of NEC basics, typical commercial / multi-tenant residential assemblies, and common gear.
  • Strong Microsoft skills; organized, proactive communicator; comfortable on active jobsites.
  • Valid driver’s license; ability to visit sites across Chicagoland.

Preferred

  • Experience with Accubid / Trimble and Bluebeam quantity takeoff.
  • Exposure to Procore, MS Project, and cost coding.
  • Familiarity with NECA labor units, IBEW work rules, and union jobsite workflows.
  • OSHA-10/30; multi-tenant residential / data center experience; basic short-circuit / coordination concepts.

Success Metrics (first 12 months)

Project Management

  • Cost / labor tracking maintained weekly with clear variance notes.
  • Submittal / RFI cycle times meeting contract requirements.
  • Successfully established an open line of communication with field supervisors, and can create efficiencies in scheduling, coordination, and material deliveries.
  • Positive field feedback on procurement timing and document clarity.

Project Estimating

  • Assists / completes take offs, compile estimates, creates a total cost estimate.
  • Help ensure bid packages are submitted on time with clean scopes and alternates.
  • Estimate accuracy within ±3–5% on materials, assists with labor estimates.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Office + field hybrid; occasional early site meetings and vendor visits.
  • Ability to walk jobsites, climb stairs/ladders, and carry drawings/specs/PPE.
